Permanent Eyeliner: Why Your Lashes, Glasses and Makeup Style Matter

When we design permanent eyeliner, we’re not simply deciding how thick or thin the line should be.

One of the most important parts of creating beautiful permanent makeup is understanding how you normally look day to day.

Do you wear strip lashes? Do you wear glasses? Do you usually wear quite defined eye makeup, or barely any at all?

All of these things can influence the style of permanent eyeliner that will work best for you.

Designing eyeliner around your usual lashes

A recent client was a perfect example.

She has very few natural eyelashes and ALWAYS wears fabulous strip lashes. Because we knew those lashes were an important part of her everyday look, we needed to take them into account when designing her permanent eyeliner.

A very fine, delicate line may have looked lovely while she wasn’t wearing her strip lashes, but once those lashes went back on, there was a real possibility that the eyeliner would simply disappear behind them.

So together, we chose a bolder style with enough definition to still have an impact once her usual lashes are back in place.

It’s a small detail, but it can make a big difference to the finished result.

Why you need to think beyond the treatment itself

Permanent makeup should work with you, rather than being designed in isolation.

When planning permanent eyeliner, we may consider:

  • Your natural eyelashes
  • Strip lashes or lash extensions
  • Whether you regularly wear glasses
  • Your eye shape
  • Your usual makeup style
  • How much eyeliner you normally wear
  • Whether you prefer a softer or more defined look
  • How you want your permanent makeup to look when you’re fully made up

Someone who rarely wears eye makeup may want something completely different from someone who wears lashes and eyeliner most days.

Neither approach is right or wrong. The important thing is that your permanent makeup feels like you.

What happens after permanent eyeliner has healed?

Our client will be able to wear her strip lashes again once the area has healed sufficiently, around two weeks after her treatment.

That gives her the opportunity to see her eyeliner alongside the lashes she normally wears before we make any further decisions.

Fresh permanent makeup will also soften as it heals, so we don’t judge the final effect immediately after the first appointment.

This is one of the reasons your retouch appointment is such an important part of the permanent makeup process.

Your retouch isn’t just about replacing pigment

It can be tempting to think of a retouch appointment as simply going over the original treatment again.

For us, it is much more useful than that.

You’ve had time to live with your permanent makeup. You’ve worn your normal clothes, done your usual makeup, put your glasses back on and, where appropriate, returned to wearing your usual lashes.

We can then look at the complete picture together.

Perhaps your eyeliner feels absolutely perfect as it is.

Or perhaps, once your strip lashes are back on, you decide you’d like a little more depth, width or definition.

Those small adjustments can be made at the retouch appointment, allowing us to build towards a result that works beautifully with your everyday style.

Bespoke permanent makeup in Tetbury

There isn’t one permanent eyeliner shape, thickness or style that suits everybody.

The same is true of eyebrows and lip blush.

Your facial features matter, but so do the things that surround them: your hair, glasses, lashes, colouring, makeup and personal style.

That’s why consultation and careful design are such an important part of what we do at LK Clinic.

Our aim isn’t simply to give you permanent makeup.

It’s to create permanent makeup that feels natural for you, fits into your everyday life and still looks like you when everything else you normally wear is back in place.

Considering permanent eyeliner?

If you’re thinking about permanent eyeliner but aren’t sure whether you would suit something very subtle or a little more defined, we can talk through the options with you.
