A Message to Women Facing Breast Surgery
If you have been told that you may lose your nipple as part of breast surgery, it is completely natural to feel overwhelmed.
Many women tell us that in the early stages of treatment they are simply focused on getting through surgery and recovery.
Later in the journey, some women choose to restore the appearance of the nipple and areola through medical tattooing. For many, this becomes the final step that helps them feel more comfortable and confident in their body again.
If you are at the beginning of your treatment journey, it may simply be reassuring to know that this option may exist later once healing is complete.
Should you wish to understand more in the future, we are always happy to offer gentle guidance and information.
What Is Areola Tattooing?
Areola tattooing is a specialised form of medical micropigmentation used to recreate the appearance of the nipple and surrounding areola following breast surgery.
Using carefully layered pigments and shading techniques, it is possible to create the illusion of a natural three dimensional nipple.
This treatment is often chosen by patients following:
- mastectomy
- breast reconstruction surgery
- nipple reconstruction procedures
- breast reduction surgery
- loss of pigmentation following surgery
For many clients, this step helps them feel more comfortable and complete in their body again.

Natural Looking Results
Every treatment is individually designed.
Careful attention is given to:
- skin tone
- colour matching
- breast symmetry
- natural shading and depth
The aim is always to achieve a result that looks soft, natural and realistic.
In some cases, tattooing can also help soften the visual appearance of surgical scars around the areola.
Examples of previous work can be shared privately during consultation or with healthcare professionals supporting patients following surgery.
Typical Treatment Timeline
Every patient is different, but nipple and areola tattooing is usually considered once:
- breast reconstruction has fully healed
- scars have matured
- radiotherapy treatment has finished
- your surgeon confirms it is appropriate
This is often around six to twelve months following reconstruction, although timing can vary depending on the individual.
A Calm and Supportive Environment
Appointments take place at our private clinic in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, located in a peaceful countryside setting.
Clients often tell us they appreciate the calm and unhurried environment, particularly after a long period of medical treatment.
Each appointment includes time to discuss:
- colour selection
- design and placement
- what to expect during the procedure
- aftercare and healing
Every client is treated with sensitivity, privacy and compassion.

Real Experience After Breast Cancer Treatment
“I no longer see breast cancer when I look in the mirror”
“My cancer journey started in September 2017. After 12 months of gruelling treatment and hundreds of hospital appointments, including radical breast surgery, I was finally discharged in November 2018.
At the time, I honestly didn’t care how I looked. I just wanted the cancer gone.
Four and a half years later I got out of the shower one day and realised how different my body looked. I had one C cup and one B cup and no nipple on one side.
Shortly afterwards I came across Luisa and booked a consultation.
From start to finish Luisa was amazing. She listened to my experience and was hugely understanding and sympathetic.
She carefully matched the size, colour and appearance of my natural nipple and created a three dimensional image over my scar. Her precision, attention to detail and the time she spent perfecting the tattoo was incredible.
The unexpected impact this has had on my life is difficult to explain. I no longer wince when I catch sight of myself in the mirror. I no longer see breast cancer every time I see my body.
I didn’t really know what to expect but I am blown away by the physical and mental impact this has had.
I will forever be grateful and cannot recommend Luisa enough.
When I later had further surgery, my surgeon was so impressed with the tattoo that he asked for Luisa’s details.”
