Can Electrolysis Be Used to Remove Stubborn Blackheads?

Most people associate electrolysis with permanent hair removal. But electrolysis is far more versatile than that.

Advanced electrolysis can also be used for a number of suitable skin concerns, including skin tags, milia, thread veins, seborrhoeic keratoses and some age or sun spots.

And sometimes, it can be useful when dealing with particularly stubborn, long-standing blackheads.

Four blackheads that had been there for years

We recently treated a client at our Tetbury clinic who had four very stubborn blackheads that had been present for several years.

Two were particularly large, with two smaller ones nearby. Because they had been there for such a long time, they were firmly impacted and weren’t going to be easily removed with a simple extraction.

We used electrolysis to carefully loosen the affected areas before gently extracting the blackheads.

Once they had been removed, a little further electrolysis work was carried out on the spaces left behind, with the aim of encouraging the areas to close and reducing the likelihood of them simply filling again.

Why do some blackheads become so stubborn?

A blackhead forms when a pore or hair follicle becomes blocked with sebum and dead skin cells. Because the surface remains open, the contents oxidise when exposed to air, which creates the characteristic dark appearance.

Some disappear or can be extracted relatively easily. Others can remain for a surprisingly long time and become much more firmly impacted.

If something has been sitting in the skin for months or even years, repeatedly squeezing or picking at it at home isn’t necessarily the answer. It can cause unnecessary trauma to the surrounding skin and it is important to establish exactly what the lesion is before treating it.

Electrolysis isn’t just for hair removal

This is one of the things we love about electrolysis. Many clients first discover it because they want permanent hair removal, particularly for unwanted facial hair, but are surprised by how many other concerns advanced electrolysis may be able to help with.

Depending on suitability, advanced electrolysis can be used for concerns including:

  • Skin tags
  • Milia
  • Thread veins
  • Seborrhoeic keratoses
  • Some age and sun spots
  • Stubborn blocked pores and blackheads

And, of course, traditional electrolysis remains a method of permanent hair removal for areas such as the chin, upper lip, bikini line and underarms.
