Why subtle permanent makeup can make such a difference
When people first come to see me about their brows, they often worry that permanent makeup will mean a big change.
But very often, that isn’t what’s needed at all.
Sometimes it’s simply about filling a few sparse areas, restoring a little shape or replacing some of the definition that has gradually disappeared over the years.
Often, just a little is enough.
Restoring what was already there
Brows can become thinner and sparser for all sorts of reasons. Ageing, hormonal changes, menopause, illness and simply years of plucking can all play a part.
Sometimes the change is so gradual that you don’t really notice it happening.
You might find yourself pencilling in the same little gaps each morning, extending the tail slightly or adding more definition through the front of the brow.
This is where very natural permanent makeup can work beautifully.
Rather than creating an entirely new brow, I can work with the brow you already have.
A few carefully placed hairstrokes
The client pictured here is a lovely example.
She wanted an extremely natural result. Her brows were already there, but they had become sparse in places and she wanted them brought slightly closer together.
I designed each individual hairstroke to follow the direction and pattern of her own natural brow hairs.
The aim was for the new strokes to disappear amongst her existing hairs rather than stand out from them.
By filling the areas that were missing, we were able to make her brows feel complete again without making them look dramatically different.
And that is often my favourite kind of result.
Permanent makeup doesn’t have to look obvious
There can still be a misconception that having your brows tattooed means having very defined or obviously made-up brows.
It doesn’t have to.
Good permanent makeup should be designed for the individual person sitting in front of me.
For one client, that might mean rebuilding a brow that has been almost completely lost. For another, it might mean adding only a handful of carefully positioned hairstrokes.
Your face, your natural hair growth, your colouring and, most importantly, how you want to look all influence the design.
I never want someone to look at you and immediately notice your permanent makeup.
I’d much rather they simply think you look well.
Small changes can make a surprising difference
Brows frame the eyes and bring balance to the face, so losing even a relatively small amount of hair can make more difference than you might expect.
Replacing what has been lost can subtly bring that definition back.
It can also remove that little job from your morning routine. No more trying to make both brows match or wondering whether you’ve filled them in too much.
For many of my clients, it isn’t about wanting perfect brows.
It’s about having their own brows back.
Your retouch is part of the process
Natural permanent makeup is also a process rather than something I try to perfect by putting too much pigment into the skin at the first appointment.
Once the initial hairstrokes have healed, I can see how your skin has retained the pigment and how everything has settled alongside your natural brow hair.
At your retouch appointment, we can then refine the result.
A few strokes may need reinforcing. We might add a little extra density in one area or make a tiny adjustment to the balance.
Again, just a little can be all that’s needed.
Working gradually gives me much more control over creating the soft, believable results that I love.
Nervous about having your brows done?
If the reason you’ve put off permanent makeup is because you’re worried your brows will look too different, you’re certainly not alone.
Many of the women who come to see me feel exactly the same way.
You don’t have to know which technique you need or arrive with a photograph of the perfect brow.
That’s what your consultation is for.
We can look at what you naturally have, talk about what has changed and decide whether a subtle enhancement could give you what you’re looking for.
Sometimes that might involve quite a bit of restoration.
But sometimes?
Just a little is all you need.
