When a Routine Electrolysis Appointment Helped Detect Skin Cancer Early

Recently, one of Gem’s regular electrolysis clients attended the clinic for a routine appointment. During treatment, Gem noticed a small crusty lesion on the client’s nose that appeared unusual.

As a MASCED trained practitioner, Gem understands the importance of recognising potential warning signs on the skin. After taking a closer look, she gently advised the client to book an appointment with her GP to have the area assessed properly.

The client later contacted us to say the lesion had been diagnosed as a BCC (basal cell carcinoma).

Thankfully, basal cell carcinomas are often highly treatable when detected early.

Why Skin Awareness Matters

It is important to understand that MASCED trained practitioners are not doctors and cannot diagnose skin cancer. However, the training enables professionals to encourage clients to seek medical advice when something does not appear normal.

Sometimes that conversation can make a very important difference.

What is a Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)?

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer in the UK.

BCCs can appear as:

  • A crusty or scab-like patch
  • A sore that does not heal
  • A shiny bump or lump
  • A pink or red patch
  • A lesion that repeatedly bleeds or crusts over

They are commonly found on areas exposed to sunlight, especially the face and nose.

According to the NHS, BCCs are usually slow growing and are very treatable when caught early.

If you notice any changes to your skin that concern you, it is important to seek advice from your GP or dermatologist.
