From Lockdown to Life-Changing Work: My Journey into 3D Nipple Tattooing
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to highlight stories of strength, healing, and confidence. For me, it’s also a reminder of how a challenging period in life led to something truly meaningful.
When the world came to a stop during lockdown, I, like so many others, struggled. Overnight, the clinic doors closed, and I suddenly found myself without my usual sense of purpose. I missed the chats, the laughter, and the daily rhythm of seeing clients and working alongside my team.
For years, I’d wanted to train in advanced areola and 3D nipple tattooing — a highly specialised form of medical tattooing that helps women feel complete again after breast reconstruction. But between a busy clinic and family life, I’d never managed to find the time or headspace to dedicate to learning such a complex skill.
Lockdown, as difficult as it was, gave me that space. It became my opportunity — and, in many ways, my lifeline.
Learning the art and science behind nipple tattooing
I began with the theory: learning about the different types of breast reconstruction, the surgical techniques involved, and the physical and emotional recovery that follows cancer treatment. Understanding this background was essential — these tattoos are not purely cosmetic; they represent identity, healing, and closure.
Next came the practical work. I started sketching nipples, experimenting with light and shade, and learning how to recreate the natural variations of skin tone and texture. My dining table quickly turned into a makeshift studio covered in art supplies and fake skin. My family became part of the journey too — they got used to seeing nipple sketches scattered around the house, and even my young daughter joined in with her own little drawings! It became a light-hearted touch in the middle of a very meaningful project.
Hands-on training in London
When lockdown finally lifted, I travelled to London to complete my hands-on training, working directly with breast cancer survivors.
That experience changed everything. Meeting the women, hearing their stories, and seeing their emotional reactions when they looked in the mirror after treatment made me realise just how powerful this work could be. These weren’t just tattoos — they were the final piece of recovery, a symbol of confidence and wholeness after an incredibly difficult journey.
Bringing the treatment home to Tetbury
When I returned to Tetbury, I knew I wanted to make this service accessible to anyone who needed it. Today, I offer 3D nipple and areola tattooing through our Free Friday Clinic — a dedicated day where we provide this life-changing treatment at no cost to breast cancer survivors.
Every Friday client reminds me why I trained in this. It’s emotional, rewarding, and deeply human. Seeing someone smile at their reflection again is something I’ll never take for granted.
If you or someone you know has undergone breast reconstruction and might benefit from this treatment, please get in touch — or simply share this post to help us reach more women who need support.
