Why do we have eyebrows?
Hi it’s Sam here! I was wondering why eyebrows exist and did a bit of research and thought I’d share what I discovered…
Over a million years ago, ancient humans lost much of their body hair, but one of the places we didn’t lose it, was above our eyes. But, why?!
Physically, eyebrows are there to help keep our eyes clean and clear. They move wetness from sweat and rain away from our eyes, deflects debris and shields our eyes from the sun, so we can maintain our sight. Ever notice how your eyebrow hairs grow outward, toward the sides of your face? That helps direct any moisture away from your eyes toward the side of your head.
So while we slowly evolved to lose most of our body hair, this protection was still required so our eyelashes and eyebrows remained. Amen to that I say! 🙏 🤭
The other main function is non verbal communication. Eyebrows help convey our feelings and express our emotions, communicating surprise, confusion, anger, sadness, happiness etc.
Eyebrows are a very significant aspect of our appearance. They are one of the most distinctive features that make up our faces and we pay alot of attention to them! They are a person’s most prominent facial features because of the many functions they perform.
In fact, similar to our fingerprints, everyone has a different eyebrow pattern. So our unique eyebrows can contribute toward facial recognition algorithms and for identification purposes to unlock your mobile phone!
They can also help accentuate the eyes and shape the face, and by altering shape and colour, we can enhance features and alter our style.
Now we can’t help with making your brow hairs thicker to protect against the elements but we can help with their appearance!
